How to wash rice
This video is a simply "how to" that shows how to wash rice. Specifically this video is about washing Japanese white rice.
Cooking rice with a Zojirushi rice cooker, or any rice cooker for that matter, is quite easy. The rice cooker does most of the hard work of actually cooking the rice and getting it just the way it should be. However prior to actually steaming your rice there is some preparation involved. This still has to be done by your own hand and it is important that you do it correctly as it can certainly make a difference to the outcome of the final product. The video below shows a Japanese woman washing her rice before she places it in her Zojirushi rice cooking machine. The important parts of washing the rice are to get rid of the white starchy coating that is covering each rice grain. This is done by adding some water to the rice and gently rubbing it with your hands. As you do so the water will begin to change to a white milky color. This can then be drained off. You just repeat this procedure until the water that you add does not change color. At this stage the rice has been washed properly and is soon ready to be cooked. The next step is just to add the appropriate amount of water to the cooking bowl and then put it in the rice cooker for steaming. It is important when you are washing your rice that you treat it gently with your hands as it is possible to damage the rice grains if you are too rough. This is to be avoided. Then once the you are satisifed with the cleanliness of the water that you drain off simply put the cooking bowl with the correct amount of water into your Zojirushi rice cooker and that's it.
